# 73 Sam Maloof (1916-2009) High Back Walnut Arm Chair with Black Leather Cushion

Described by the Smithsonian Institution as "America's most renowned contemporary furniture craftsman," Southern Califormnia mastercarpenter Maloof was a self-taught American treasure. In 1985 he became the first craftsman to receive a MacArthur "Genius Award". His innovative bandsaw techniques and love for the sculptural, visual and tactile qualities of wood are easily seen -- and felt -- in this armchair. “I want my furniture to be touched, to be sat upon, to be eaten upon, whatever,” he once said in an interview. This armchair also retains many of the elements of his signature work, the Maloof rocker -- cherished by Presidents Carter and Reagan. His work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the L. A. County Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Signed and Numbered. 30w x 43h x 26d
